...They are thought to have originally been a maritime people who lived along the coast from mainland China to the Indochina Peninsula, but gradually began to advance into the Pacific Ocean, spreading from the Philippines to Micronesia, Indonesia, and Melanesia. They introduced root crop agriculture (tuber farming) to the indigenous peoples of these regions, and by about 1500 BC had reached eastern Melanesia, and by about 1200 BC had reached Tonga. Around 300, a large-scale migration of people from Tonga to various parts of Polynesia began, and by about 1000, they had spread over a vast area stretching from the Hawaiian Islands in the north to New Zealand in the south and Easter Island in the east.
