C 10 H 18 O (154.25). Monoterpene alcohol with a p -menthane skeleton. ( R )-α-terpineol ( p -menth-1-en-8-ol) was found in the essential oil of Japanese cedar leaves. Subsequently, β-terpineol ( p -menth-8-en-1-ol), γ-terpineol ( p -menth-4-en-1-ol), and many other stereoisomers have been isolated and identified from the essential oils of Artemisia , Cinnamomum , Eucalyptus , and other plants. Dehydration of terpinol with phosphoric acid produces a mixture of these. It has a lilac-like odor and is used in fragrances. ( R )-α-terpineol has a melting point of 37 °C and a boiling point of 104 °C (2 kPa). +100.5° (ethanol). 0.9475. 1.4819. LD 50 4300 mg/kg (rat, oral). β-Terpineol has a melting point of 32-33°C and a boiling point of 209-210°C (100 kPa). 0.919. 1.4747. γ-Terpineol has a melting point of 68-70°C. 0.8948. 1.4628.
