Aggressive attacks of mental confusion seen among Malays. Derived from the Malay word amog, the word can be traced back to amuco, meaning a soldier of a suicide squad. When these attacks occur, the patient becomes extremely excited and shows destructive aggression, even attacking people with swords, but eventually collapses from exhaustion and suffers from memory loss. The German Kraepelin was the first to describe amok from a psychiatric perspective (1909), and he considered it to be a symptomatic psychosis associated with epilepsy, malaria, cerebral syphilis, hashish poisoning, or heat stroke, or a type of mania, but in recent years many people consider it to be a kind of hysterical delirium.
