Defense Facilities Agency

This organization is responsible for the acquisition and management of facilities related to the Self-Defense Forces and the U.S. military, as well as the integration of related operations. With the coming into force of the Japan-U.S. Security Treaty, the number of cases in which the Self-Defense Forces continued to use facilities and areas returned by the U.S. military, and in which the U.S. military and the Self-Defense Forces jointly used facilities and areas, increased. In response, the Defense Agency (now the Ministry of Defense) Construction Headquarters and the Procurement Agency were merged to form the Defense Facilities Agency in November 1962. In the wake of the bid-rigging scandal involving senior officials of the Defense Facilities Agency that came to light in January 2006, the Defense Facilities Agency was abolished on September 1, 2007, and its operations were integrated into the Ministry of Defense.

自衛隊および米軍関係の施設の取得および管理ならびに関連業務の統合を担当する組織。日米安全保障条約の発効等を背景として、自衛隊が米軍から返還された施設・区域を引き続き使用する場合や米軍と自衛隊が施設・区域を共同使用する場合が増加したことを受けて、1962年（昭和37）11月に、防衛庁（現防衛省）建設本部と調達庁が合併する形で発足した。2006年（平成18）1月に発覚した防衛施設庁幹部による談合事件の影響もあり、2007年9月1日防衛施設庁は廃止され、その所掌業務は防衛省に統合された。
