The peace treaty was concluded in Lodi, 35km southeast of Milan, in 1454 between the Italian states. In the mid-15th century, Venice tried to abandon its long-standing alliance with Florence and ally with King Alfonso of Naples, so the Duchy of Milan and Florence, feeling threatened, allied themselves with it. The endless conflict between the Italian states was brought to a halt by the arrival of news of the fall of Constantinople to the Turks in 1453, and Pope Nicholas V advocated that the Italian states should put aside their differences and unite under the imminent threat of Turkey.
