Emulsion chamber

A device that detects high-energy photons by alternating layers of materials such as nuclear emulsion plates, carbon plates, and lead plates with industrial X-ray film. Photons are recorded on the nuclear emulsion plates and X-ray film as a cascade shower of photons inside the chamber. Unlike cloud chambers and bubble chambers, it is possible to enlarge the photosensitive surface, and does not require any special operations or operating devices other than exposure and development, making it economical and allowing it to be freely designed to suit the purpose of the experiment. It is extremely useful for research into ultra-high energy phenomena caused by cosmic rays.

原子核乾板，炭素板，鉛板などの物質層と，工業用X線フィルムを交互に重ねて高エネルギー光子を検出する装置。光子は，チェンバーの中で光子がつくるカスケードシャワーとして，原子核乾板とX線フィルムとに記録される。霧箱や泡箱と異なり，感光面の拡大が可能で，露出と現像以外に特殊な操作や作動装置を必要とせず，経済的で，実験目的に合せて自由に設計できる。宇宙線による超高エネルギー現象の研究にきわめて有用である。
