An island in the southern Caribbean Sea, part of Venezuela. It has an area of 1,100 km2 and a population of 87,500 (1978). Together with the surrounding islands, it forms the state of Nueva Esparta (population 325,909, 1995), with La Asunción being its capital (population 5,540). Columbus discovered the island in 1498 on his third voyage. As the island's name, Margarita, means "pearl" in Spanish, suggests, pearls have been harvested there since the beginning of the 16th century. The center of pearl harvesting was Porlamar (population 20,000). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
