NOx - nitrogen oxide

Japanese: NOx - NOx/NOX/えぬおーえっくす（英語表記）nitrogen oxide

A compound of nitrogen and oxygen (O) produced when nitrogen (N) in fuels such as coal and oil, or nitrogen in the air, is oxidized during high-temperature combustion. When generated, it is nitric oxide (NO), but is oxidized in the atmosphere to become nitrogen dioxide (nitrogen dioxide). Nitrogen dioxide is harmful to the human body and can cause respiratory diseases. It is emitted in large quantities not only from fixed sources such as steelworks, power plants, and factories, but also from mobile sources such as automobiles, ships, and aircraft. Nitrogen dioxide becomes nitric acid mist in the atmosphere and can also cause acid rain.

石炭や石油などの燃料中の窒素(N)や、空気中の窒素が、高温燃焼時に酸化されて発生する窒素と酸素(O)の化合物。発生時は一酸化窒素(NO)だが、大気中で酸化されて二酸化窒素(二酸化窒素)となる。二酸化窒素は人体に有害で、呼吸器系疾患を起こす。製鉄所、発電所、工場などの固定発生源だけでなく、自動車、船舶、航空機などの移動発生源からも大量に排出される。二酸化窒素は、大気中で硝酸ミストとなり、酸性雨の原因ともなる。
