Amos - Amos (English spelling)

Amos was a prophet who appeared in Israel in the mid-8th century BC. He was a shepherd from Tekoa, a wilderness area south of Jerusalem. At the time, Assyria was on the verge of launching a large-scale war of aggression into the Mediterranean world in order to build a global empire under King Tiglath-Pileser III (reigned 745-727 BC). The ruling class of the Northern Kingdom of Israel was proud of half a century of peace and prosperity and oppressed the peasants. Amos denounced social evil and religious decadence to the people who gathered at the festival, including at the sanctuary at Bethel, and prophesied the downfall of the kingdom through God's judgment. He was banished by the priests of Bethel for this, but he left a great impact on later generations.

紀元前8世紀中ごろイスラエルに登場した預言者。エルサレム南方の荒野テコア出身の牧者。当時アッシリアは、ティグラト・ピレセル3世（在位前745～前727）による世界帝国建設のため、地中海世界への大規模な侵略戦争を開始する直前にあり、北イスラエル王国の支配階級は半世紀に及ぶ泰平(たいへい)と繁栄におごり、農民を圧迫していた。アモスは、ベテルの聖所をはじめ、祭りに集まる人々に、社会悪と宗教的堕落を糾弾し、神の審判による王国の滅亡を預言した。このためベテルの祭司によって追放されたが、後世に大きな影響を残した。
