Firefly Vine - Firefly Vine

A perennial plant of the family Boraginaceae (APG classification: Boraginaceae). The stem is 15-25cm tall and covered with coarse bristles. After flowering, horizontal branches emerge from the base and new shoots grow at the tips. The leaves are alternate, oblong or narrowly oblong, stalkless, and rough with stiff hairs. From April to May, blue-purple five-petaled flowers bloom upwards or sideways in the axils at the end of the stem. It grows in forests and forest edges in hilly and mountainous areas, and is distributed from Hokkaido to Okinawa, as well as the Korean Peninsula, China, and the Amur region. The name comes from the likening of the scattered flowers to the light of fireflies.

ムラサキ科（APG分類：ムラサキ科）の多年草。茎は高さ15～25センチメートル、全体に粗い剛毛があり、花期後に基部から横走する枝を出し、先端に新芽をつける。葉は互生し、長楕円(ちょうだえん)形または狭長楕円形で柄はなく、堅い毛があってざらつく。4～5月、茎の先の葉腋(ようえき)に青紫色の5弁花を上向きまたは横向きに開く。丘陵から山地の林内や林縁に生え、北海道から沖縄、および朝鮮半島、中国、アムールに分布する。名は、花が点々と咲くようすを蛍の光に例えたもの。
