Criticism of "Dream of the Red Chamber"

Japanese: 《紅楼夢研究》批判 - こうろうむけんきゅうひはん

This was one of the major movements aimed at changing the mindset of Chinese intellectuals after the liberation. An unknown young man criticized academic authorities on how to concretely apply materialistic thought to the study of the classic work Dream of the Red Chamber, and Mao Zedong supported this movement in a letter on October 16, 1954. The procedural issue of whether to accept the critical article also led to self-criticism by Feng Xuefeng and others in the editorial department of Literary News. Yu Pingbo, who continued the tradition of Hu Shi's Study of the Dream of the Red Chamber (New Red Studies), regarded Dream of the Red Chamber in his works Study of the Dream of the Red Chamber and Brief Essay on the Dream of the Red Chamber as an idea novel expressing the idea that form is emptiness, and as a lamented autobiography of the author Cao Xueqin.

中国，解放後の知識人の意識変革をめざす大運動の一つ。唯物論思想を，古典《紅楼夢》研究にどう具体的に適用するか，学術権威を無名の青年が批判し，それを毛沢東が1954年10月16日手紙を書いて支持する形で繰り広げた運動。批判論文を採用するかどうかの手続問題から，馮雪峰（ふうせつぽう）らの《文芸報》編集部自己批判をも引きおこした。胡適の《紅楼夢考証》(新紅学)の系統を継ぐ兪平伯（ゆへいはく）は《紅楼夢研究》《紅楼夢簡論》などで，《紅楼夢》を色即是空を表す観念小説で，作者曹雪芹の嘆きの自伝とみなした。
