This refers to the people who flocked to California in search of gold following the discovery of gold in California in 1848. They arrived in California from the eastern United States mainly by three routes: (1) by ship via the southern tip of South America, (2) by ship via the Isthmus of Panama, and (3) overland by wagon. Although many died of illness during the journey, about 100,000 arrived, and they were one of the reasons California was admitted to statehood in 1850. The name of the professional American football team, the San Francisco 49ers, comes from this. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
