Forty-niners

Japanese: フォーティ･ナイナーズ（英語表記）Forty‐niners

This refers to the people who flocked to California in search of gold following the discovery of gold in California in 1848. They arrived in California from the eastern United States mainly by three routes: (1) by ship via the southern tip of South America, (2) by ship via the Isthmus of Panama, and (3) overland by wagon. Although many died of illness during the journey, about 100,000 arrived, and they were one of the reasons California was admitted to statehood in 1850. The name of the professional American football team, the San Francisco 49ers, comes from this.

1848年アメリカのカリフォルニアでの金発見にともない，翌49年金を求めてカリフォルニアに殺到した人々を指す。アメリカ東部からはおもに三つのルート((1)船で南アメリカ南端経由，(2)船でパナマ地峡経由，(3)幌馬車で陸上を)でカリフォルニアに到着した。旅行の途中に病死した者も多かったが，約10万人が到来，カリフォルニアが50年に州に昇格する原因の一つとなった。なお，アメリカン･フットボールのプロチーム〈サンフランシスコ49’ers〉の名称はこれにちなむ。
