The Chronicles of Igor's War (English: The Chronicles of Igor's War)
An ancient Russian epic poem. The author and his status are unknown, but it is currently believed to have been written by a bard or a squire who served Prince Igor (1151-1202) or Grand Prince Svyatoslav of Kiev. The exact date of its creation is unknown, but it is thought to have been around 1185-1187. It was accidentally discovered by a manuscript collector around 1790. The manuscript was destroyed in the Great Fire of Moscow in 1812, following the invasion of Napoleon's army. All that remains today are the original manuscript, which was transcribed in 1796, and the first printed edition, which was published in Moscow in 1800. The poem describes the events that occurred in 1185 when Prince Igor led his army on an expedition to defeat the Polovtsians, and is also recorded in the Russian chronicles. A mixture of poetic language with a unique rhythm and oral style, the work points out that the defeat of the Russian army was caused by internal conflicts among the grand princes, calls for the unity of the Russian people, and at the same time sings with lyrical delicacy the lamentations and prayers of Prince Igor's wife, making it a work that can be considered a "pearl of ancient Russian literature."
