Year of death: December 19, 1912 Year of birth: Tempo 2 (1831) A Christian pastor in the Meiji period. The eldest son of a farmer in Musashi Province's Tama District (Fuchu City). In 1863, he went to Yokohama in search of a new life. Through an introduction by missionary JH Barra, he became D. Tamson's Japanese teacher and helped translate the Bible into Japanese. In 1869, he was baptized by Tamson. He became an elder at the first Protestant church, the Church of Christ in Japan (established in 1872, with Barra as temporary pastor), and also became an elder the following year when the Tokyo Church of Christ was established (with Tamson as temporary pastor). He preached in his hometown. In the same year, he was ordained as the first Japanese pastor.
