A narrow peninsula jutting out from the southwestern part of the state of Alaska in the United States, in the northwest of North America. It is about 760 km long. It is connected to the Alaska Range in the east and the Aleutian Islands in the west, and together they form the geographical unit known as the Alaska-Aleutian region. The continuous mountain range that combines the peninsula and the archipelago is sometimes called the Aleutian Mountains or the Aleutian Arc. The peninsula, along with the archipelago, has many volcanoes and calderas, of which the caldera of Mount Katmai (2,047 meters), formed by an eruption in 1912, is particularly famous. There are also many glacial landforms. [Tsurumi Eisaku] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
