This gas is discharged from iron-making blast furnaces and is similar in composition to producer gas made from coke and air. It is composed mainly of carbon monoxide (27%), nitrogen (60%), and contains small amounts of hydrogen (2%) and carbon dioxide (11%). Although its total calorific value (850-1100 kcal/mm 3 ) is low, it has long been used as a heat source in steelmaking and other industries.
