Bertrand, Aloysius

Born: April 20, 1807, Ceva, Italy
Died: April 29, 1841. Paris. French poet. His real name was Louis Jacques Napoléon Bertrand. He lived in Dijon and edited a local newspaper, but moved to Paris and wrote Gaspard de la nuit (Gaspard of the Night), a collection of prose poems that paint a dreamlike picture of Dijon in the Middle Ages. Published by Sainte-Beuve after the author's death (1842), this work was the first attempt at prose poetry in France, and was highly praised by Baudelaire and Mallarmé for its metrical prose with rich pictorial evocativeness. It was further reevaluated by the 20th century Surrealists, and today it is considered a masterpiece that surpasses Romanticism. He suffered from poverty and illness during his lifetime, and died of tuberculosis in solitude.
