A ship made of steel. With the advancement of shipbuilding technology, ships have evolved from wooden ships to ships made of wood and iron, to iron ships, and then to steel ships due to the invention and improvement of steelmaking methods. However, today's large ships are generally made of steel, and are propelled by turbine engines or diesel engines. In 1868, the British Lloyd's Register of Shipping announced rules for building steel ships, recognizing that steel, which has superior material strength to iron, can be about 20% thinner than iron. In 1873, France built the first steel warship, the Louttable. In 1879, the first steel ocean-going steamship, the Rotomaha, was launched in the UK, and in 1890, the steel ship Chikugogawa Maru was launched at the Nagasaki Shipyard. Currently, most ships, except for small ones, are made of steel. Since then, research by the shipbuilding industry and shipowners has progressed, and the cargo carrying capacity of steel ships has increased dramatically compared to wooden and iron ships.
