A former town in Hioki County on the west coast of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture. It consists of the Fukiagehama sand dunes, the lowlands behind them, and the Shirasu plateau inland. The town is primarily agricultural, producing rice, mandarin oranges, tobacco, and other products, and also engages in coastal fishing. Hioki roof tiles, made from high-quality clay, are famous. 鹿児島県薩摩半島西岸,日置郡の旧町。吹上浜砂丘と背後の低地,内陸のシラス台地からなる。農業を主とし,米,ミカン,タバコなどを産し,沿岸漁業も行う。良質の粘土で作る日置瓦は有名。2005年5月日置郡東市来町,伊集院町,吹上町と合併し市制,日置市となる。29.25km2。6065人(2003)。
