[raw]? Died September 2, 965. A Chinese painter from the Five Dynasties and early Song Dynasty. Born in Chengdu (Sichuan Province), his courtesy name was Yaoshu. He served the later emperor of Former Shu, and then became the Hanlin Yuan Taizhong of Later Shu. When Later Shu fell, he moved to the Song capital of Bianjing (Kaifeng) with his brother Weiliang and his sons Jubao and Ju Cailah, and died there. He learned painting from Zhao Guangyin and Teng Changyou, and also incorporated the landscape painting styles of Li Sheng and Sun Rui to create his own unique style. He worked with a variety of subjects, and was particularly skilled in painting birds and flowers. As the founder of the Huang style (→ Huang and Xu two styles), he is considered one of the two greatest painters of bird and flower painting in the Song Dynasty, along with Xu Xi.
