A French female writer of the late Middle Ages. Born in Venice. At the age of four, she was summoned by her father Thomas, who was an important astrologer to Charles V, and moved to France. At the age of 15, she married Étienne Castel, the king's notary and secretary, at his request, and had three children. During this time, the king, who was her father's patron, died, then her father, and then her husband died suddenly from the plague, and Christine thus became "alone" (her motto). She was 25 years old. In order to support her family, she decided not to take the usual path of remarrying, but to "become a man."

中世末期のフランスの女流作家。ベネチア生れ。4歳の頃，シャルル5世の占星学者として重用された父トマに呼びよせられてフランスに移住し，15歳のとき，その意向によって王の公証人兼秘書官のエティエンヌ･カステルと結婚，3児をもうける。この間，父のパトロンである王が死に，父が死に，さらに夫も疫病で急死，クリスティーヌはかくて〈ひとりぼっち〉(彼女の銘)になる。25歳であった。彼女は一家を支えるために，再婚という通常の道を選ばず，〈男となる〉決心をする。
