[Anticlines and synclines]
A fold that is convex upward from a horizontal plane is called an anticlinal structure, and the opposite is called a syncline. On the other hand, a fold in which older strata are found toward the inside of the fold, regardless of the fold's orientation, is called an anticline, and a fold in which newer strata are found toward the inside of the fold is called a syncline (Figure 1).
