Also known as the Catholic League. A radical Catholic alliance formed in 1576 by Henry I, Duke of Guise (→ Guise〈Duke〉). With the support of Spain, the Duke of Guise claimed the throne in opposition to the Protestant Henry of Navarre (later King Henry IV). He exiled King Henry III, who was trying to seize control of the Catholic League on the "Day of the Barricades" (a revolt by Catholic citizens of Paris, May 12, 1588), to Chartres, and seized control of Paris, but was assassinated at the end of 1588 during the Three Estates General in Blois. The Catholic League did not recognize Henry IV's accession to the throne (89), and continued fighting in various places, and in Paris, they resisted mainly through the Committee of Sixteen. Henry IV's subsequent conversion to Catholicism, which aimed to unify the kingdom, made it easier for the leaders of the Catholic League to submit to him.
