A master carpenter in the early Edo period. Born in Kishu (Wakayama Prefecture). His father Yoshimasa was the founder of a family of carpenters, and his father served the Toyotomi clan and was involved in the construction of the Great Buddha Hall of Hoko-ji Temple and Jurakudai. Masanobu served the Edo Shogunate and became the Shogunate's chief carpenter in 1632 (Kan'ei 9). His five-volume work, Shomei, is famous as a secret book on wood cutting. Among the buildings he worked on are the main hall of Tenmangu Shrine in Wakaura, Wakayama City (1606), the Jodo Hall of Nikko's Rinnoji Temple (1619), the Kawagoe Kitain Temple pagoda (1638), and the stone pagoda of Nikko (1642).
