Italy brought a breath of fresh air with E. De Amici's Cuore (1886) and C. Collodi's Pinocchio (1880), but E. Nuccio's sharp fairy tales and G. Rodari's The Adventures of Cipollino (1951) also stand out. I. Calvino's The Four Seasons of Mr. Marcovaldo (1963), which is a compilation of Italian folk tales and approaches children's literature, should not be overlooked.
