Marcion

Marcion

A heretic of ancient Christianity. His life and ideas are known only through the orthodox Christian refutations against him. He was probably born in Sinope, a town in the province of Pontus on the Black Sea coast, and went to Rome around 140 to develop his own theory. In 144, he was expelled from the church and established an independent church, where he himself compiled the New Gospel. The sect he formed (Marcionites) was considered dangerous by the Latin Church Father Tertullian and other ancient Christian Church Fathers as a threat to orthodox faith. He took Paul's antinomianism to an extreme, emphasizing the gospel over the law and the God of the New Testament over the God of the Old Testament. He believed that Jesus Christ was the good God of the New Testament who appeared in human form and descended into hell to save humans from their ties. He was hostile to matter and advocated the doctrine of the appearance of Christ. His position can be said to be a Christian adaptation of Gnostic thought.
