Things to Come

...Furthermore, Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1926) was the first full-scale sci-fi spectacle, rather than an expressionist film. It was a grandiose work that depicted episodes in a laboratory where robots are made and the fantasy of building the Tower of Babel, making full use of special effects using the Schuftan Process, but its commercial failure brought the production company Ufa to the brink of bankruptcy. Welles, who saw it at the time and criticized it as the height of stupidity, adapted his own novel Things to Come (1933) himself and directed it by WC Menzies (1896-1957) ten years later, in order to set an example of a true futuristic film that would dispel the image of junk such as robot workers and skyscrapers, which became a work that will go down in sci-fi film history, but it also failed commercially. Meanwhile, in Hollywood, the first sci-fi musical, The World 50 Years Later (directed by David Butler), failed in 1930, creating a jinx that futuristic stories would not be a hit, and major studios shied away from sci-fi movies.
