Carbides, nitrides, borides, and some oxides have extremely high hardness. Materials that utilize this property are collectively called hard materials. Materials in practical use include diamond (C), silicon carbide (SiC), boron carbide (B 4 C), titanium carbide (TiC), tungsten carbide (WC), boron nitride (cubic) BN, titanium nitride (TiN), silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ) , aluminum nitride (AlN), and alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) . The hardness of a material can be thought of as the degree of resistance to forces that attempt to deform it. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
