Villahermosa (English spelling)
The capital of Tabasco State in southeastern Mexico. It is a river port city on the Grijalva River, located in the coastal lowlands along the Bay of Campeche, a tributary of the Gulf of Mexico. Founded in 1596, the city changed its name several times before adopting its current name, which means "beautiful town," in 1915. It is the state's largest commercial and industrial center, distributing tropical crops from the surrounding agricultural areas, and is home to industries such as sugar refining, distilled spirits, rice milling, lumber, tobacco, soap, and sewing. The city is home to the cathedral built in 1614, the Archaeological Museum, and the Autonomous University of Tabasco (1958), and the La Venta ruins, belonging to the Olmec culture, which were excavated in the western part of the state, have been moved and preserved in the nearby La Venta Park. The main road connecting Mexico City and the Yucatan Peninsula runs through the city. Population: 391,610 (estimated 1990).
