A frog of the Pipa family. Body length is 5-12 cm. It is found in central and southern Africa. Its back is dark and its underside is usually light-colored. It is almost completely aquatic and rarely comes onto land. Its flattened body is adapted for swimming and burrowing into the mud at the bottom of the water. Its smooth skin is covered with a layer of mucus that gives off an unpleasant odor. It usually lives in stagnant ponds with very low oxygen levels. Its tadpoles are transparent. It is very hardy and easy to raise, like freshwater fish, making it an excellent laboratory animal. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
