An island in the Lesser Sunda Islands in central Indonesia, adjacent to the east of Bali. Mount Rinjani (3,726m) towers in the north, but a wide savanna spreads out on the southern foothills. Livestock farming is popular, and rice, indigo, and coffee are also produced. Many Balinese people migrated to the western half, and it was historically an affiliated island. The eastern half is inhabited by the Muslim Sasak people. The Wallace Line, a biological distribution line, runs through the Lombok Strait between the island and Bali. The capital is Mataram in the west. Area 4,990 ^km2 . Population approximately 1.5 million.
