Yellow Glaze

Japanese: 黄釉 - おうゆう
Yellow Glaze

...In the documents and ancient documents of the time, terms such as porcelain, porcelain vessels, celadon, and blue porcelain appear, and they were called Shinoutsuwamono or Aoshi. The famous Shosoin Sansai were originally furnished by Todaiji Temple, but in 950 (Tenryaku 4), they were transferred to the Shosoin South Storehouse after the collapse of the Kyousakuin Double Storehouse where they were kept. A total of 57 vessels have been handed down, including 5 Sansai, 35 Nisai, 12 Green Glazed, 3 Yellow Glazed, and 2 White Glazed. Traditionally, colored-glazed pottery has been said to have begun in the Nara period under the influence of Tang sancai, and the oldest known sancai pottery is a small sancai jar excavated from the tomb of Ojida no Yasumaro, who died in 729 (Tenpyo 1). In recent years, however, green-glazed pottery dating to the latter half of the 7th century has been discovered in various parts of the Kinai region, and it is believed that the production of green-glazed pottery began first under the influence of South Korea, and then polychrome-glazed pottery such as sancai began under the influence of Tang sancai.
