Taeuber-Arp, S. (English)

…The painter P. Klee, the sculptor A. Giacometti, and the architect Le Corbusier are representative of Swiss art in the 20th century, but they were also mainly active in Germany or France. Dadaism in the early 20th century originated in Zurich in 1916, but the only Swiss person directly associated with it was the female painter and sculptor Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889-1943). Other representative contemporary Swiss artists include abstract painter J. Itten, who taught at the Bauhaus; Max Bill (1908- ), one of the proponents of "concrete art"; abstract sculptors J. Tinguely and Zoltán Kemeny (1907-65); figurative sculptor Carl Burckhardt (1878-1923); and architect Karl Moser (1860-1936), known for his Antonius Church in Basel (1926-28).
