第2次大戦後,アメリカとイギリス両国が中心となって構想し設立した国際通貨体制の名称。1944年アメリカのニューハンプシャー州ブレトン・ウッズにおいて連合国通貨金融会議が開催され,通常ブレトン・ウッズ協定Bretton Woods Agreementsと呼ばれる二つの協定が締結された。この協定にもとづいて,46年6月に国際復興開発銀行(いわゆる世界銀行,IBRD)がその業務を開始し,翌47年3月に国際通貨基金(IMF)が同じく業務を開始した。
