The capital of the Dakahlia Governorate in northern Egypt, this town is located on the east bank of the Zumyat River. It was founded in 1219 as a garrison for the army of Saladin's nephew Malik al-Kamil, but was occupied by the Crusaders. It is famous as the place where Louis IX of France, who led the Crusaders, was defeated by the Mamluk army in 1250. The town's name comes from the Arabic word "Mansoura," meaning victory. It is a distribution center for cotton, rice, and flax in the northeastern part of the delta, and cotton weaving and rice milling are thriving. It has a modern streetscape and is home to a technical college and a university. Population: 357,800 (1986 estimate).
