Touat (English spelling)

Japanese: トゥアト(英語表記)Touat
Touat (English spelling)
A group of oases in the Saoura region in the central part of Algeria in the Sahara Desert. In the narrow sense, it refers to 135 oases stretching 120 km north to south from Adrar (about 860 km south of Oran) on the east side of the Messaoud Dry Valley, but in the broad sense, it includes the oases along the Saoura Dry Valley in the northwest, In Salah and Timmin in the east, and extends for 600 km. The underground water veins running south from the Atlas Mountains are guided by foggara (artificial underground waterways) and used for domestic water and irrigation. Cereals, vegetables, and date palms are cultivated, and sheep are herded. Since ancient times, it has been an important caravan route connecting the Mediterranean coast with Sudan and Timbouktou (Mali), and the town is fortified. Currently, the Trans-Sahara Highway passes through it. At the southern end, Reganeu, there was a French nuclear testing base, but it was returned.
