Amu Dar'ya River

Amu Dar'ya River
A river in Central Asia. It originates from the glaciers of the Pamir Plateau and flows through Afghanistan and the former Soviet Central Asia (Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan) before emptying into the Aral Sea. Its total length is 2,620 km, and its drainage area is 465,000 km2. In Greek and Latin sources, it was called Oxus or Oxus, and in Chinese historical sources, Kisui. The middle and lower reaches of the river are desert and have no inflowing rivers, and 25% of the flow is lost due to water withdrawal for irrigation and evaporation. The rapid increase in water withdrawal for irrigation since 1960 has caused a drop in the water level of the Aral Sea.
