A type of cocktail. Dry gin and lime juice with syrup (cordial) are shaken and poured into a cocktail glass. A short drink. It is said to have started in the late 19th century when Sir Gimlet, a Royal Navy surgeon, suggested that officers should dilute the gin they were given with lime juice for health reasons, but there is also a theory that it was named after the sharp taste of a gimlet, which reminds one of a "gimlet" (a T-shaped awl). ◇It became famous for the famous line "It's too early for a gimlet" said by Terry Lennox to the protagonist Philip Marlowe in Raymond Chandler's hard-boiled novel "The Long Goodbye."

カクテルの一種。ドライジン、シロップ入りのライムジュース（コーディアル）をシェークしてカクテルグラスに注ぐ。ショートドリンク。19世紀末にイギリス海軍軍医のギムレット卿が、将校に配給されるジンを健康のためライムジュースで薄めて飲むよう提唱したのが始まりとされるが、刺すような味わいが「gimlet＝Ｔ字の柄のついた錐」をイメージさせることから命名されたという説もある。◇レイモンド・チャンドラーのハードボイルド小説「長いお別れ」の中で、テリー・レノックスが、主人公のフィリップ・マーロウに言った「ギムレットには早すぎる」という名台詞により有名になった。
