Heron - Heron
A general term for birds of the heron family. They are water birds with a wingspan of 12-50cm and long beaks, legs and necks. There are about 60 species distributed throughout the world. Eighteen species live in Japan. They feed on fish and crayfish in rice fields and rivers. Some species build their nests on tree branches and others in reed beds. Some species breed in groups, and breeding sites for groups of grey herons, great egrets, intermediate egrets, little egrets, black-crowned night herons, Japanese bitterns and reed bitterns are known all over Japan, and some are designated as natural monuments.
