...The true history of French cinema began on December 28, 1895, when the Lumiere brothers held the world's first paid screening, or show, of the results of their invention, the cinématograph (camera and projector), at the Grand Café in Paris. Louis Lumiere (the younger brother), a photographer by trade, shot live-action films (such as "Baby Feeding," "Factory Exit," and "Arrival of a Train," all made in 1895), while magician Georges Méliès, who was fascinated by the invention of the cinématograph, created a number of fantastical trick films (such as "The Cursed Cave" (1897), "Christ Walking on the Water" (1899), "The Magic Book" (1900), and "A Trip to the Moon" (1902). ...
