Italian composer. Born near Cremona, he entered the Milan Conservatory at the age of nine. While working as a church organist in his hometown, he established himself as an opera composer with works such as The Betrothed (1856, revised in 1872), and in 1876 he performed his masterpiece, the opera La Gioconda, at La Scala in Milan. The opera, written to a libretto by Hugo and written by composer A. Boito (see Otello), who was also known as a collaborator of Verdi, was a huge hit, and in 1883 it was performed at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, and the Metropolitan Opera House, New York. This made the composer's name known all at once. In 1883 he became a professor at his alma mater, where he taught Puccini and Mascagni. The ballet music from La Gioconda, the Dance of the Hours, is famous. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
