[Born] King Yeongjo 51 (1775) [Died] Sunjo 1 (1801). A Christian from the Joseon Dynasty in Seoul, Korea. Born in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province. His pen name was Deokso. His baptismal name was Alexandre. He passed the Jinshi exam at the age of 16, and later married the daughter of Yakcheon, the elder brother of Jeong Yakyong, a leading figure in the Korean Christian community. He became deeply devoted to Christianity, and helped the Chinese priest Zhou Wenmo, who had infiltrated Korea, and worked hard to spread Christianity. In the year Sunjo 1 (1801), when persecution of Christianity occurred, he fled to Jecheonshuron in South Chungcheong Province. He was arrested and executed in the Bansho Incident, in which he appealed to Alexandre de Goubéa of the Beijing Christian Church to send warships and use force against the Korean government in order to secure freedom for Christian missionary work in Korea. This Bansho Incident led to the Korean government's persecution of Christians becoming even more severe.
