Also known as Lepidodendron. A huge fern that flourished from the Carboniferous to Permian periods. It belongs to the Club moss family and is one of the plants that formed the source of coal at that time. It is 30m tall and the trunk is over 1m in diameter at the base. Many branches branch out from the top of the tree. Large sporangia spikes are attached to the ends of the branches. The leaves are slender and 10-50cm long. As it grows, the leaves fall off and the leaf scars are arranged in a fish-scale pattern, hence the name. In Japan, the closely related Lepidodendropsis and Leptofloem have been excavated from the Kitakami Highlands and Shikoku. → Related topic: Coal Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
