Jan Gossaert

A Flemish painter who lived from about 1478 to about 1532. He was nicknamed "Mabuse" after his birthplace. After working in Bruges for several years, he was registered as a free master in Antwerp in 1503. In his youth, he was influenced by Van der Goes and David. While accompanying Philip, Duke of Burgundy, in Rome from 1508 to the end of 1509, he became fascinated by ancient art. From then on, according to the politician and geographer L. Guicciardini, he was "the first painter to bring narrative and poetic themes, together with nude figures, from Italy to the Netherlands" (1567), that is, he became one of the representatives of the Antwerp Mannerists.

フランドルの画家。生地名から〈マビューズMabuse〉の通称がある。数年間ブリュージュで働いた後，1503年アントウェルペン(アントワープ)で自由親方に登録。若いころはファン･デル･フースやダーフィトの影響をうける。08年から09年末までブルゴーニュ公フィリップに随伴してローマに滞在中，古代芸術に感激する。以後の彼は，政治家，地理学者グイッチャルディーニL.Guicciardiniによると〈イタリアからネーデルラントに物語的･詩的主題を裸体人物とともにもたらした最初の画家〉(1567)，すなわちアントウェルペン･マニエリストの代表者の一人となる。
