A sulfur mine located in Matsuo Village, Iwate County, Iwate Prefecture (now Hachimantai City). It is located on the southeastern foot of Chausu-dake in the Hachimantai volcanic group, and a large sulfur outcrop was discovered there in 1882. It was run by Matsuo Mining Co., Ltd. from 1914 onwards, and its heyday was from 1950 to 1953. As the largest sulfur mine in Japan, it produced approximately 90,000 tons of refined sulfur and approximately 500,000 tons of pyrite (crude ore) in 1968, but closed in 1969 due to the widespread use of sulfur recovery through desulfurization of refining exhaust gas and flue gas from thermal power plants.
