Mirror Man

Japanese: 鏡男 - かがみおとこ

The title of a Kyogen piece. A female Kyogen. A man from the Matsuyama family in Echigo Province buys a mirror in the capital as a gift for his wife. However, his wife, who does not know what a mirror is, sees her reflection in it and becomes angry, thinking that her husband has brought home a woman he has become acquainted with in the capital. In the Okura school, the husband and wife appear as two characters, with the husband playing the shite role. The Izumi school also features the husband as the shite role, but the mirror seller appears as an ado and the wife as a small ado. The story has a similar structure to the Noh play Matsuyama Kagami and the Rakugo story Matsuyama Kagami, and both are thought to be derived from narrative literature. [Haneda Akira]

狂言の曲名。女狂言。越後の国，松の山家の男が，妻へのみやげに，都で鏡を買って帰る。が，鏡というものを知らぬ妻は，映った自分の姿を見て，夫が都でなじみになった女を連れて帰ったと思って怒る。大蔵流は夫と妻の2人が登場し夫がシテ。和泉流も夫がシテだが，鏡売りがアドとして登場し，妻は小アド。能《松山鏡》，落語《松山鏡》と同工異曲の筋立てで，いずれも説話文学の流れを汲むものと考えられる。【羽田昶】
