During the Heian period, this was a university school for the Wake clan. It was founded by Wake Kiyomaro's eldest son Hiroyo in his private home south of the university dormitory in the late 8th or early 9th century. It is the oldest university school in Japan. It housed students from the Wake clan and housed several thousand volumes of books that students could use to study on their own before attending university to take lectures and exams. 40 cho of reclaimed land was used to cover expenses. In 885 (Ninna 1), Sugawara no Michizane stayed here, and his poem is included in the Kanke Bunso, so it is believed to have existed until the end of the 9th century, but it appears to have been abolished shortly thereafter.
