One of the ancient Japanese minting agencies. Established in March 818 (Kōnin 9) by reorganizing the Nagato kokushi, it had a fixed number of staff: one chief, one vice-minter, two judges, three chief clerks, two minters, one coinage master, and five historians. In August of the same year, one horse was allocated to each of the unnecessary post houses in the country, and the remaining 44 horses were to be used for transporting lead for minting. Three months later, in November, an order was given to issue the Fuju Shinpo, so it is thought that the Mintsmen were established for the purpose of minting the coins. In the Tang Dynasty, Mintsmen were dispatched several times in the 8th century, so the name was likely inherited from them. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
