George
(George) The name of the King of England. [1] (I) Reigned 1714-27 . Born into the German House of Hanover. Ascended to the throne after the death of Queen Anne under the Act of Succession of 1701. Since he did not understand English and often stayed in Hanover, national affairs were left to the cabinet and parliament, which resulted in the development of the cabinet responsible system. ( 1660-1727 ) [2] (II) Reigned 1727-60 . Son of George I. During his reign, he started a war with Spain in the American colonies, intervened in the War of the Austrian Succession, and fought in the Seven Years' War. Together with Prime Minister Pitt the Elder, he built the foundations of the colonies and further developed the cabinet responsible system. ( 1683-1760 ) [3] (III) Reigned 1760-1820 . Grandson of George II. Unlike George I and II, he tried to strengthen the monarchy, but failed in his colonial policy in America, which sparked the War of Independence. ( 1738-1820 ) [4] (IV) Reigned 1820-30. Son of George III. His troubled private life led to the decline of the monarchy. (1762-1830 ) [5] (V) Reigned 1910-36 . Second son of Edward VII. A typical constitutional monarch, he established the status of the royal family. During World War I , he renamed the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, which succeeded the House of Hanover, to the House of Windsor. ( 1865-1936 ) [6] (VI) Reigned 1936-52 . Second son of George V. He ascended to the throne after the abdication of his elder brother, Edward VIII (Duke of Windsor). World War II broke out during his reign, but he fulfilled his responsibilities as a constitutional monarch. Father of the current Queen Elizabeth II ( 1895-1952 )
