Japanese: 航空救難 - こうくうきゅうなん

In some cases, it refers to search and rescue activities using aircraft, but in the narrow sense, it refers to search and rescue of aircraft in distress. Aircraft accidents often occur in or around airports, but it is not uncommon for aircraft to be lost in mountains, forests, or at sea, so most countries have a permanent search and rescue system in place. Of course, search and rescue activities within a country are carried out with the cooperation of each country's military, police, coast guard, and private companies and organizations, using all kinds of equipment such as aircraft, boats, and vehicles, but internationally, there are provisions for mutual assistance in the Convention on International Civil Aviation, which requires member countries to cooperate in search and rescue when necessary, regardless of the nationality of the aircraft in distress, and the organization, code of conduct, and communication and signaling methods are specified in detail.

航空機を使用して行われる捜索･救難活動を指す場合もあるが，狭義には遭難した航空機に対して行われる捜索，救難をいう。航空機の事故は空港内およびその周辺で発生することが多いが，山岳，森林，洋上などでの遭難もまれではないため，おもな国々では常時，捜索･救難態勢を整えている。国内での捜索･救難活動がそれぞれの軍，警察，沿岸警備機関，民間の企業･団体の協力により，航空機，船艇，車両などあらゆる装備を駆使して行われることはもちろんであるが，国際的にも国際民間航空条約に相互援助の規定があって，加盟国は必要な場合には遭難機の国籍いかんにかかわらず捜索，救難に協力することが義務づけられており，その場合の組織，行動基準，通信･信号方法などが詳細に決められている。
